Supporting Afghan Journalists

Following the collapse of Afghanistan to the Taliban in August 2021, the media—once celebrated as one of the few democratic achievements of the past 20 years—has endured relentless scrutiny and severe restrictions. Within the first six months of Taliban rule, approximately 70% of media outlets ceased operations, and around 60% of media workers (5,928 individuals) lost their jobs, with many forced to flee the country.

The crisis has only worsened. In 2024 alone, the Taliban closed at least 12 media outlets, both public and private. Since January 1, 2024, 25 journalists have been arrested or detained according to RSF.

Violence, censorship, bans, and a deteriorating economic situation are the primary drivers compelling journalists to leave Afghanistan. According to the Afghanistan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA), approximately 300 journalists are facing dire economic conditions in Pakistan and Iran. Those who have managed to immigrate to European countries often find themselves unable to work in their professional fields, further marginalizing their voices.

In response to this crisis, Oxus, a media association dedicated to supporting media professionals, is launching a project titled “Supporting Afghan Journalists.” This initiative aims to provide financial relief and freelance opportunities to Afghan journalists in desperate need. Through this program, Oxus will offer annual freelance contracts to two Afghan journalists, ensuring their vital work continues despite the challenging circumstances.

To implement this urgent and timely project, we seek your support as an organization committed to defending press freedom. The annual budget for this initiative is €7,680 (seven thousand, six hundred eighty euros).
